Holiday photos - summer 2024 - III.
Straight from the cliffs in Dover we drove to Canterbury. We were driving our own car and this is significant in that the steering wheel is on the wrong side for the UK (the left side) and that is completely unsuitable for left-hand driving. However, it is manageable with a passenger, i.e. the passenger - i.e. me - has to look to the right to see whether the road is clear :-))
Canterbury is located on the River Stour in the county of Kent in southeast England. In the Middle Ages it was a place of pilgrimage. The cathedral (built in 597 AD) is the center of the Church of England and the Anglican Communion and its stonework and stained glass windows incorporate Gothic and Romanesque elements.
Its old city walls surround the medieval center with cobbled streets and half-timbered houses.
We spent two nights in Canterbury, the weather was pleasant and we strolled through the streets and alleys and of course visited the Cathedral - incredible in its furnishings and as a structure - and the Roman Museum. The onward journey took us once again along the city wall - which, as we learned, was built by the Romans.
Our next destination is the county of Sussex and we visit the well-preserved castle ruins of Bodiam Castle in wonderful sunshine.
From the towers you have a wonderful view of the complex, the nearby wine fields and farms.
We were given a fitting farewell to the moated castle... and were really looking forward to our first English garden - we chose Nymans Garden from the variety of gardens in England.
This outlook should suffice for now. I'll tell you about it in the next post.
In my own garden, the work was done before the onset of frost, the last flowers were picked and the bird house was put up. I'm prepared... it's not far until December, the sweet, delicious month of Christmas.
A hug for you.
...Viola, you had an exciting journey and I enjoying seeing the sights.I'm also looking forward to the sweet, delicious month of Christmas!
AntwortenLöschenIt’s difficult enough driving on the “wrong” side of the road, so I can barely imagine having the steering on the “wrong” side too. You are braver than I am! You obviously hd a great time in Britain. All the best - David
AntwortenLöschenDearest Viola,
AntwortenLöschenWhat a wonderful trip you enjoyed together!
That was more than worth the effort for driving on the wrong side of the road and with all the car's mirrors it is feasible.
The Cathedral is stunning and it is so good for the soul for visiting such a place where so many got baptized, married and even had their memorial service.
Looks like the weather was picture perfect as well!
Hugs,
Mariette
Kjære Viola,
AntwortenLöschenTusen takk for alle de fine fotografiene du har tatt. Katedralen er helt utrolig flott. De lagde mange vakre bygninger før i tiden. Så nydelig bilde av rødstrupen. Jeg ønsker deg en fortsatt fin høst!
Klem fra Marit

AntwortenLöschenWhat a lovely trip! Canterbury sounds like an amazing place to visit, with its rich history and stunning architecture. I can imagine how the challenge of driving on the left side of the road added some extra adventure to your journey. The Cathedral sounds fascinating too – such a historic and beautiful structure. Thank you for sharing the details of your travels!

I am just loving your posts about your holiday in England! We haven't made it to this part of the country and after seeing this post, I would pack up in a heartbeat and go to Canterbury. And the castles -- I do love a good castle! Pity we weren't in England at the same time! (I hear you on the driving. We didn't drive and boy, after being in cars and buses, I'm glad we didn't! Well done!)
AntwortenLöschenGracia Viola for allowing me to walk with you through Canterbury and I associated the name with ^The Canterbury Tales" icon of English literature.
AntwortenLöschenHow absolutely delightful to revisit some of our favourites through your eyes, Viola! We've holidayed in the area a couple of times, and your post and photos bring back so many happy memories. xxx P.S. We have always taken our own car without any problems ...

Viola, what a wonderful driving holiday you have enjoyed in the UK. I imagine it would be a tad tricky driving on the other side of the road. The gorgeous architecture of Britain always takes my breath away.

The sun was shining here in the morning, but now it has darkened and the fog is descending. I love the fog and enjoy this Sunday afternoon with a good book and coffee. Hugs, Éva
